An Introduction to the ADDIE Model for Instructional Designers

Think about how you can create a buzz around the new learning program and shine a spotlight on desired behaviors. Make sure to give learners ample notice about the start and completion dates of the program. Is there a need for side programs that provide extra support to learners in addition to the main program?

Step 5. Evaluation

This model attempts to save time and money by catching problems while they are still easy to fix. The third stage of the ADDIE model is when you focus on really developing your learning product or initiative. At the stage you should start to structure your learning content and delivery approach. While doing this you should remember the importance of user experience. Once you’ve built your content and defined your approach you need to test it and iterate to ensure you have a good final product before seeking to implement it.

The philosophies of the ADDIE and Agile methodologies share many of the same practices. In the Agile Methodology, collaboration is a fundamental element of the process, much more so than in ADDIE. This post is a collection of all of my presentations and podcasts about instructional design careers and freelancing.

Any instructional designers or corporate trainers who understand the ADDIE model have an advantage in adopting and adapting other models to meet their learners’ instructional needs. Instructional designers are responsible for all elements of building new course content. With so many components involved in the design of a successful course, designers needed a way to effectively build and measure how to do so consistently.

A suite of educational technology tools can help you in the process, and for more on this check out our article on the best instructional design tools on the market. Perhaps you will see the opportunity for a more advanced version of the same training, building on existing knowledge. The output of the analysis phase is a needs assessment to feed into the design phase.

In the design phase, the focus is on learning objectives, content, subject matter analysis, exercise, lesson planning, assessment instruments used and media selection. Plus, ADDIE is an iterative model which allows for feedback, evaluation, and changes at every stage to ensure learning objectives are met. The ADDIE model is a leading learning development model used to design, develop and serve learning content. It offers a structured, integrated approach to learning, and organizations often use it to design employee training programs. An instructional design model is a tool or a framework to develop your training materials.

If the two previous stages required planning and brainstorming, the Development stage is all about putting it into action. This phase includes three tasks, namely drafting, production and evaluation. An example of this is one of the HR upskilling projects run by AIHR. The training has a blended approach – mostly online learning combined with monthly sessions based on learners’ needs. These sessions aim to motivate learners to complete the e-learning while also providing them with assignments and challenges to solve.

ADDIE has evolved over the years, with revisions to the five stages, making the model more dynamic and interactive. However, a version of ADDIE similar to what we know today has been in use since the middle of the 1980s. I then went on to research and write out each paragraph (Develop) and move it to publication, adding some visuals and links (Implementation). If I’m smart about it, I’ll check how the article is doing in a few weeks (Evaluation) and see if I need to make any changes to make it clearer or more engaging. This is also the time to reach back again to the DESIGN phase to make sure the timing is right. If the course is taking too much time to complete, it might be time for the chopping block.

Learning to Teach Online

After you have been asked to create an online course, and before you let panic set in, reference the ADDIE course development process for guaranteed success. I recently had the pleasure of speaking in a webinar on instructional design careers and trends. We answered questions about both instructional design career pathways and where instructional design may be heading in the future. This is also the phase where the project manager ensures that the books, hands on equipment, tools, CD-ROMs and software are in place, and that the learning application or Web site is functional. These are the best instructional design certifications and courses.

When training is the answer, you can work together to create meaningful plans that are based on the values of the students you want registering for your courses. This is where all the information gathered during the analysis step is dissected to make informed decisions about the design of the development program. By taking the time to analyze the course’s recipients, you can ensure pre-existing knowledge is not being re-delivered and that the course outcome matches the business’s real-life needs. When designing a new training program, it can be easy to get lost in the details.

Alpha is the first version that gives a complete look and feel of the module. The model was built and refined by the educationists, and the current version was derived in the mid-1980s. Like any good craftsman, your choice of design tools should depend on the project at hand and your desired outcomes.

This is the last step where significant changes to the program as a whole can be made, so it is imperative that stakeholders are happy with the chosen goals and processes needed to achieve them. To see an example of a typical learning design blueprint, check out this template for a blended learning course, that combines self-paced and workshop elements. Rapid prototyping, with its focus on speed and less attention to completion and polish, might work well for you if you are short on time and plan future re-runs of the same course. What may sound like common sense (“Well of course I need to analyze needs before designing!”) does tend to get lost when we are busy and under pressure to deliver. Evaluation, for example, might be forgotten in the mire of to-do lists and content provider email exchanges. Practitioners over the years have made several revisions in the stages of the original hierarchical version.

You may want to use web-based tools like Survey Monkey or Qualtrics for users to evaluate the training. A military training framework might not be the first thing that comes to mind when designing employee learning solutions. Yet, the ADDIE model has proven its versatility and effectiveness far beyond its initial scope, becoming a cornerstone of instructional design worldwide. You paid attention to everything you learned in the implementation stage and delivered the course. You can find out by checking assessment targets through the LMS, surveying learners and instructors, conducting interviews—whatever method you choose to get feedback. We’re sharing some of our favorite instructional design techniques here in this toolkit to support new instructional designers or “old” ones who want to sharpen their saw (pun completely intended).
